It is safer for Philippine record companies to release love songs than to experiment and release rock or hip-hop albums. The love song reigns supreme in the Philippines, especially when it comes to local artists. Whatever the reason, the market is more willing to buy adventurous music by Western artists than by local ones. So, in 2002, Warner Music Philippines released an album of love songs by the enduring and best-selling group Side A. All songs were previously released on earlier Side A albums, and are heard here in acoustic versions. The album is presented in a unique fashion as well, as all 12 songs are placed on side one of the cassette, and side two contains the same songs but without vocals, with only the instrumental accompaniment. Presumably, this is to allow listeners to sing along with the music, karaoke style. Side A are skilled, emotive practitioners of the love song, and Acoustic Love Songs is an excellent, pleasant offering. Some songs feature voice and guitar, and some songs have voice and piano. Either way, the music is nice. Side A's take on the well-known Philippine evergreen 'Tell Me' is a highlight, and contains an amiable, synergetic commingling of voice and guitar. 'Ang Akin Awitin' (My Song) is another highlight, and the song has a palpable spunk, even if sung in a slow, acoustic manner. The piano playing on Will I Ever is distinctive, and can almost be regarded as a song within a song. Throughout the album, both the guitar and piano accompaniment is very warm and impressive.
